Be my Valentine, Upcycling and the Elements (#26)

As I write this I’m sitting in a borrowed Educator office space with a ‘sea view’ room (well at least a beautiful water body called the Metta pond), I hear the soft murmurs of a school and realized how much this is a part of me. I observed the Educators have a stronger spring in their step as we finally walked through the doors and into our very own Avinya Academy Bandaragama. It’s home. It’s a solace of learning and innovation. There were several moments this week as I walked through the spaces and realized. It’s real! It’s happening. All that hard work and commitment from this amazing team has finally paid off. The first campus is alive and buzzing!  This week has been a long one as we welcomed some well wishers and donors on Sunday for an Open House and got to talk about our amazing learning spaces and the story behind it all. On Monday the Avinya team and students all settled into our new home. And…they lived happily ever after. Who am I kidding right? 🙂 This isn’t a fairytale...

Acclimatization, Fitness, Multi-tasking and chocolate (#25)

It’s been a week of…well the best word that I can think of is… acclimatization. We’ve been down in Bandaragama frequently over the past few months for interviews, site visits and meetings. Orientation week gave us a sneak peek but this week…well this week has been a full window into our new adventure! The whole team was in this Monday as we navigated through a very challenging and complex day. Samisa highlighted the day in his blog which he wrote especially for the occasion. https://samisa-abeysinghe.blogspot.com/2023/02/avinya-academy-first-day-of-school.html?m=1 So what were our Milestones for this week ? How can we choose? But let me try… Completed the first week of ‘regular school’ in hybrid format while we wait for the final touches to be completed on our campus Learnt how to adapt teaching based on the many things that don’t run smoothly or as planned Responded to emerging student needs when your meticulous lesson plan has three more stages but you dwell on stage 1 because you kn...

Orientation week, giving thanks, BINGO and hope #24

Image
Lots of things to celebrate this week! We are celebrating 24 weeks of Avinya’s blog being up, a moving multi-religious ceremony to commemorate the soft opening of our beautiful new campus facility and meeting and connecting with some wonderful new people in our new home in Bandaragama.  We are celebrating one more thing: the start of our orientation week with our students! Instead of a quote, let me start with a story this week. It’s dawn. You practically bounce out of bed. You’ve got to make sure you can tumble out the house after ticking off everything that needs to happen to make sure your family’s going to be able to tumble out and get on with their day too. You hop in a tuk and race against time to the transport pick up point. You feel the cool breeze on your face. The morning dew on the breeze that surrounds you ironically makes you feel all warm inside. You see the sun’s rays slowly awakening. Rays of hope for the day that begins! You see the Avinya van with an Avinya Academ...
