Vocational Magic in the Works #45

Image
Greetings dear readers, I’ve taken the floor yet again, collaborating with a couple of educators to document another eventful week at Avinya! The week commenced with a burst of excitement as intriguing developments unfolded in all three vocational areas. Vidushi and Dee have some wonderful thoughts to share with us about them! A highlight this week was the Jetwing training which spanned three days. During the three days the students explored what is unique about being in the hospitality industry paying special attention to the importance of quality service. They also worked in teams to explore difficult situations that could occur in their day to day workplace through role plays and had a lively discussion on the importance of feedback and how to take direction. The most important aspect was enlightening the students on the variety of options and departments that lie in the hospitality industry and how important it is to choose what suits your personality the best. A BIG thank you to R

Greetings dear readers,  Welcome to another captivating week at Avinya! We've had quite the whirlwind of activities and exciting developments, and I'm here to spill all the delightful details for you.  First and foremost, I'm thrilled to announce that our meticulous recruitment process for new educators has reached its successful conclusion. We've handpicked two individuals who will soon become invaluable members of our Avinya family. Their fresh perspectives and expertise are sure to add a new dimension to our already vibrant educational environment. We can't wait to involve them in the day-to-day hubbub we’ve come to know and love! Meanwhile, our junior floaties have been diligently working on student recruitment for the upcoming September intake. They have taken on the responsibility of reaching out to applicants, scheduling interviews, and providing invaluable assistance throughout the entire recruitment project. Their dedication and all-around awesomeness tru

It’s been a whirlwind of a week, I tell you. So much so that there was a time we weren’t entirely sure we’d get to the weekly blog update. Nevertheless in true Avinya teamwork fashion here we are. As I type, Sinalie sits across the room filling in a form from a supplier and alternating to creating a collage of photos from this week which you will see at the end of this blog post.  I sit here and decide that this week, maybe the most important things to highlight are the lessons learnt and the new perspectives. Let me start with the lessons learnt.  We are now ready to start enrolling students for our September 2023 six-month Empower Program. As we pulled out some of the processes, workflows and documents from our first round of student recruitment we realized two things: 1) how much things have changed from 8 months ago, 2) how much we have learnt not only about our students but about ourselves, each other and our community This brings me to a quote that really resonated with me. “ We

Hey everyone, Bidding the mid-term holiday adieu, it’s back to the grind at Avinya! From an energizing training session to planning for the next student intake, let's dive into the highlights of the week. The week kicked off with a training session for our educators. Dee started off with a game of Taboo to set the tone and get everyone engaged. Our educators raced against the clock to describe their colleagues without highlighting some of their most notable qualities. After much laughter and some confusion, our focus shifted towards planning for the upcoming student intake at Avinya Academy, Bandaragama. We’ve learnt a lot from our first batch and have been fine tuning our process for the second run. Applications will be open very soon, so keep an eye out for the opportunity to join our academy! In-between causing some chaos by accidentally disrupting Dee's carefully sorted files, Anju also has some intriguing plans cooking up for the academic team. Rest assured, we will provid

Money spells , design drills and farewells #41

Hey everyone,  Greetings from Avinya, where another much anticipated mid-term holiday has begun! It has been a week of budgeting, design thinking and heartfelt farewells, setting the stage for the upcoming final lap of the academic year. As the students gear up to take a well-deserved break and recharge their minds, join us on this blog as we take a walk through the memorable moments of this week. Our "Manage My Money" program has taken off with great enthusiasm among the students. As they eagerly envision their futures, they have delved into creating comprehensive budgets and financial plans. It has been eye-opening for many to realize that maintaining a dog (as wonderful as they may be) may not be as easy as they initially expected! Some have also had to downsize their future weddings in order to make realistic adjustments to accommodate their lifestyles after the big ceremony. This exercise has instilled a sense of financial awareness and responsibility, preparing them f
